A possible error message for this problem is: “The program can’t start because DLL is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.”
You should know that the .dll file reported as being the culprit might be different in some reported cases, that’s why I didn’t mention any, but the error is in most of the cases the same and it can be fixed the same way.
Other .DLLs that might be reported are: x2utilms.dll – x2utili6.dll – x2utili8.dll – etc., but it’s not the DLL who is actually causing this as you will see below.
Check printers. In most cases this happens due to the fact that when you open an Office app, one of the first things it does is to check for the printer connection – if there is any printer installed, even a “virtual” one like PDFCreator or such emulation software that converts files to different formats via virtual printers.
You will get this error if you have a printer installed (set as default) and it can’t be contacted. I will give you an example. Someone had a printer set as default from another location. When he was trying to open a Word file the above error appeared.
I had to set as default a different printer from his current location.
Alternatively you can remove all printers and try to open the file to see if that works for you and if the error goes away.
The thing is this is one of the most radical solutions and it should be applied only if you can’t seem to find out what is causing this.
Before doing this you should try to access control panel – printers and try to print a test page on the default printer. If that works, the file should be opened without the error.
In case the error still exists it’s time to also try other things like restarting the print spooler service on the local machine.
There is also a situation when the solution above did not solve the issue although the reported error was the same. These are cases with Xerox printers where
you will have to remove and then reinstall the printer and the driver but unfortunately that won’t be enough.
For such cases you can tell me the printer model if you are using a print server (what OS) and when do you get the error (when opening an Office app file or when you print something – from what application/software) and we can investigate together.
